Explore this dreamlike black and white photo of the sun shining through the sculpture of a “water spirit” (génie de l’eau) one of many decorations of the Pont Alexandre III (Alexander Bridge) in Paris. Built for the world fair in 1900 and to memorize the Franco-Russian alliance it features numerous sculptures ranging from fames to nymphs.
Here, the sun is shining through this “water spirit”. So there is an association of two of the four elements: fire and water. Then there is the earth and the air, the latter shown by the birds and the clouds, “connected” through the Eiffel Tower. But then the “water spirit” is a “spirit” so it is connected to the air. But the statue as such is also standing on the earth. And the earth is illuminated by the sun, the fire. So it looks like there is some sort of a unification of the four elements. But this all happens behind the fencing and so in a “different” world, away from us. On the other hand there also is a geometry which kind of draws us into the scene.
Shining Through is a photograph of a surreal scene in which the four elements, fire, water, air, earth seem to associate.
I’ve made this photograph in black and white so that it best conveys the emotions of this surreal scene.
