A Paris landscape of a different kind, which symbolizes Paris’s resistance to all kinds of trouble it already has gone through. Paris’s motto, “Fluctuat nec Mergitur,” meaning “tossed by the waves but does not sink,” is a powerful symbol of the city’s resilience. Despite enduring countless struggles throughout history, Paris continues to stand tall, undeterred by adversity. Paris’s refusal to falter in the face of hardship is a testament to the human spirit, and serves as an inspiration to people worldwide.
Historic photos are in black in white. And this is why I’ve made this Paris landscape in this way. But this is not the only reason: black and white photos naturally emphasize shape and form. And here, there are several lines drawn by the shape of the clouds and by canons going “up” from the left to the right. They symbolize energy and power and so emphasize the canons in the foreground. Also the Eiffel Tower – as the symbol of Paris – comes well into its own in black and white thanks to the contrast with the background.
The energy lines and the canons are though not the only elements which display the resilience of Paris. There also is this massive wall in the foreground looking like a rampart and a moat which protect. This is why this photo is called “Power to Defend”.
